Abstract

With its ancient cities renowned for their private libraries filled with manuscripts with content reflecting the history of the trans-Saharan realm, the territory once known as Bilad al-Shinqit, now Mauritania, was home to a rich history of scholarly tradition. As contact between the Afrique Occidentale Francaise (AOF) officers and the people of Mauritania increased, the French colonial administration continually defined and redefined the ways in which it would approach education as a means of inculcating the population with a pro-colonial discourse.
