Sense of Coherence and Post-Traumatic Stress after Emergency Cesaerean Section

Background: An unplanned operative delivery is often experienced as a mental trauma. It is important to identify women with an increased risk of post-traumatic stress symptoms, so that they can have the support and counselling they need.
Methods: A group (n = 122) women who had given birth by emergency caesarean section filled in the self-assessment scale Sense of Coherence two days after birth and the Impact of Event Scale three months postpartum. Obstetric and demographic variables were obtained from the medical records.
