VERMONT SEES DRUGS DRIVING CRIME RATE

Vermont public safety officials linked a jump in robberies and assaults in 2006 to a surge in consumer demand for drugs supplied from organizations outside the state.

The Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) based the report on data from law enforcement agencies throughout the state during 2006.

The VCIC said the increases in Vermont's Violent Crime Index mirrors what is happening in other rural jurisdictions.

Nationwide the increases in Violent Crime Index Crimes were greater in rural areas than in urban areas.

In particular, increases in 2006 for murder, robbery, and aggravated assault were greater in rural areas than in urban areas.
