The Los Angeles Police Department's program mat uses former gang members to help defuse conflicts among younger gang members has been an important factor in the declining homicide rate.
While ex-gang members have voluntarily gone to the streets to try to turn youths away from violence for years, the difference in 2007 is that the interventionists are working with the full support of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Police Chief William Bratton and the District Attorney's Office.
The police department estimates 60 gang intervention specialists are receiving salaries and other official support from the city.
