Custom-made mouth guards are best for preventing oral-facial injuries
The practice of sports dentistry is becoming part of the total sportsmedicine field. "Between 15% and 17% of all sports injuries occur in the facial area," says Ray R. Padilla, DDS, UCLA School of Dentistry, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Academy for Sports Dentistry. "As many as two million teeth are knocked out annually and every athlete has about a 10% chance of sustaining an oral-facial injury. Those of us in the Academy think we can help prevent certain injuries and treat others."
