How much more potent is bupivacaine than ropivacaine for clinical nerve block? Or, alternatively, is there a "minimum alveolar concentration equivalent" for local anesthetics that can be used to compare their potency at regional anesthesia? Unfortunately, the answers to these 2 questions are "not known" and "no." While some authors have used experimental ulnar or median nerve blocks to compare local anesthetics in humans, there is no standard or consensus technique by which to compare the potency of local anesthetics under clinical circumstances.17
