Tales for Children, Icelandic Style

It seems Icelandic children's books have never been better. Some 40 authors are currently writing for young people and original Icelandic children's books appear at a rate of 30 to 40 per year.

SOME ACADEMICS BELIEVE THAT ICELANDIC CHILDREN'S literature first appeared with Poem for Children (Barnaljoð) in 1780. It is 106 verses written in 1739 by Vicar Vigfús Jónsson consisting of advice for his newborn daughter, though the poem reads as if it could be written for a girl or a boy. It has been called "solemn, worldly and optimistic." It was a beginning, but the world of children's publishing in Iceland didn't really exist until the late 1800s and early 1900s.
