Lars von Trier didn't invent the Danish film industry, but he's a reminder of when Hollywood took its cue from Copenhagen.
IF THE DANISH FILM INDUSTRY WERE HOLLYWOOD, ITS history over the last century-plus could be viewed as having consisted of little between D.W. Griffith and Gus Van Sant, exception made for a reverential nod or two toward John Ford. Auteur comparisons within Europe might be equally jarring: The Danish answer to Sergei Eisenstein was Carl Theodor Dreyer, to Fritz Lang Carl Theodor Dreyer, and to Federico Fellini Carl Theodor Dreyer. Within only Scandinavia? Best confine those thoughts to Finland and Norway and forget about that other country from which people named Bergman ...
