The Rise of Riise

Master photographer John Olav Riise, apparently appreciated primarily in France during the mid-20th century, is slowly finding wider recognition-even in his native Norway.

JOHN OLAV RIISE (1885-1978) IS A UNIQUE FIGURE IN THE history of Norwegian photography. There were very few other Norwegian photographers who developed a modernist visual language with the same consistency as he did. He was particularly active on the exhibition front during the 1920s and 1930s in Paris and this proved to be the launching pad for a successful artistic career. But despite the fact that he exhibited frequently, his work seldom gained the attention it deserved in the Norwegian press.
