There was a time in Winnipeg when the phrase, " I'll meet you at Timothy's boot," was familiar to every citizen of all ages. It referred to the statue of Timothy Eaton on the main floor of the Eaton's department store, an example of art that served as a Winnipeg landmark and reference point for 80 years.
The old statue now rests on the second floor of the MTS Centre. Although it is no longer the comforting beacon it once was, "Timothy's boot" nonetheless remains a powerful symbol of how art can contribute to a city's sense of personality and self-awareness.
It is regrettable, therefore, that the city is proposing to slash funding for public art to $100,000 from $500,000 in this year's ...
