The Humane Society issued the following news release:
The Humane Society of the United States praised Gov. Tim Kaine for passing legislation that will make all organized animal fighting activities a felony. Virginia now has what The HSUS considers one of the nation's most effective laws to eradicate cockfighting and dogfighting.
H.B. 656 was introduced by House Majority Leader H. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, and passed on Feb. 12 by a vote of 93 to 2. The State Senate passed the same bill by a vote of 40 to 0 on March 3. A companion bill to H.B. 656, S.B. 592, was introduced by Sen. Tommy Norment, R-Williamsburg, is now awaiting the governor's signature.
