Article: FDA reviews two health claims

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in December it may change or even revoke the health claims for soy protein and heart disease and for low-fat foods and the risk of some cancers. The agency said it intends to reevaluate the claims because "new scientific evidence appears to have weakened the substance-disease relationship for these authorized health claims."

The health claim linking consumption of soy protein to a reduced risk of heart disease was authorized in October 1999 and fueled a boom in products containing at least 7.25 g of soy protein per serving.
