A 55-year-old woman presented to our clinic with mild vasomotor symptoms occurring 4 times a month. She had undergone surgical menopause (total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy) at age 52 years for treatment of uterine cancer. Her medical history was also remarkable for osteoporosis (T score, -3.0 hip), managed with oral calcium (1200 mg/d). She was interested in complementary and alternative medicine and had been attempting to treat her symptoms "naturally."
During the initial visit, the patient expressed concern about her personal risk of cancer because her sister, who was postmenopausal at age 60 years, was recently diagnosed as having inflammatory breast ...
