St John the Evangelist Church in Barrowin-Furness, Cumbria, a reinforced concrete structure, had fallen into a state of disrepair. The main walte of the church, including the Bell lower and parapets, were suffering from spalling concrete, due to corrosion of the reinforcing steel. The client, The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, wanted its church to be repaired and restored to its original appearance.
In order to provide a long-term, durable repair solution, the extent and, more importantly, the cause of the concrete deterioration and corrosion of the steel had to be determined. A detailed survey of the structure was conducted, checking for possible causes such as carbonation or ...
