The death on 22 October, at the age of 96, of Ursula Vaughan Williams, widow of Ralph Vaughan Williams, removed the last surviving link with the composer who, more than any other, epitomised English music for more than half a century, from Linden Lea and Toward the Unknown Region of 1903 and 1905 respectively to the Ninth Symphony of 1958, his last work, which was premiered just four months before his death.
