Ms. Jackson's Story: Leaving a Pet Behind

'I figured either the cat has made it or she hasn't.'

Ms. Jackson1 is director of a senior center in New Orleans. She and her husband fled Hurricane Katrina, traveling first to Memphis and then to her son's home outside of Baton Rouge. The couple returned to New Orleans on September 30, 200S, almost a month after the hurricane hit, and found that their home had sustained some roof damage from a falling tree, but no damage from the flood.

We had left our cat. She survived, but she was really angry with us. She was okay .. . she was glad to see us. But she's very old and hates to travel. I think she would have been miserable at my son's house; she would have run away. They have so many dogs ...
