For centuries, skin color has served as a controversial standard by which the mental capacity and the moral virtue of individuals and groups alike have been measured. From the ancient Greeks, to the dawn of European imperialism in the 18th century, and on to the modern narratives of racism, the relationship between skin color and the composition of a society has been a complex one. Within that relationship roams a persistent tension that continues to incite harmful sentiments ranging from condescension to suspicion and hatred.
