SHOT GLASSES EVOKE images of alcoholic excess, but you don't have to be a drinker to collect them. For most shot glass collectors, the tiny tumblers simply represent a fun hobby-and an affordable attempt to connect with American history.

"Shot glasses aren't for drinking from," notes Brad Rogers, who was certified by the "Guinness Book of World Records" in 2000 as having the world's largest shot glass collection, with 8,411 distinct glasses. "They're for building memories and getting knowledge from." This is the message Rogers has passed on to students in his home city of Las Vegas as he's visited schools to talk about his collection in recent years.
