Article: Geothermal Is Hot

IN THE SEARCH FOR alternative sources of power, companies are digging deep-literally-tapping into natural steam, hot water or hot dry rocks mined from the Earth's crust to generate clean, renewable energy for heat and electricity.

"There has been a surge in geothermal development projects worldwide," says Terry Kallis, managing director at Petratherm Ltd., an Adelaide, Australia-based geothermal company.

Non-conventional resources are engineered and are most prevalent in Australia, Spain, China, the United States and India.
