New Orleans' City Council voted unanimously on Dec. 20, 2007 to approve the demolition of nearly 4,600 affordable housing units, after having agreed to postpone their decision.

Mayor Ray Nagin wrote a letter to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), saying, "as a demonstration of good faith," the city would let HUD tear down the BW Cooper Housing Project, where several buildings have been demolished.
