Today's industrialized nations used government regulation of trade, not "free trade," to build their economies. Why shouldn't Third World countries get to do the same?
In the early 1990s, the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement marked a new epoch of U.S. economic expansion into the Americas. Today, the chimes of -free trade" are ringing out even more loudly in corporate America, as neoliberal economic policies-such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas-continue to make their way around the world.
