This killer disease needn't be - if you know the facts
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer found in British women under 35. In the UK around 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and it causes around 1,100 deaths. Tests carried out in America have shown that black women tend to have poorer survival rates than white women when it comes to this condition, although survival rates have significantly increased in black women in recent years. Other US-based studies have shown that black women with human papilloma virus (HPV), which are known to cause seven out of 10 cases of cervical cancer, may have a lower cervical cancer risk than white women with HPV.
