When West Virginia's 55 boards of education turned in their 10-year Comprehensive Educational Facility Plans to the West Virginia School Building Authority in 2000, they listed a total of 1,502,138 square feet as abandoned properties.

That comes out to a little more than 26 football fields standing abandoned across the Mountain State.

Each BOE is responsible for its own proper-ties, but not all have handled those properties the same way.
