Remembering Duke

My recollections of this monumental man and his music span the years from about 1941, when I first heard my dad's Ellington 78s, to 1978, when I produced the recording For Duke. Jazz recordings heard at our house in Chicago ranged from Muggsy Spanier and Fats Waller to Duke Ellington and His Orchestra, reflecting my dad's wide-ranging tastes in jazz.

In 1945 I was a 15-year-old sophomore in high school and the news editor of our school paper. Celebrity interviews were sometimes a feature, so, when I read that Duke and his band were coming to the Chicago Theatre, I asked the faculty advisor's permission to check out the possibility of interviewing Duke.
