Article: Massachusetts Inventors Develop Encapsulated Inorganic Antimicrobial Additive for Controlled Release

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 20 -- Jeffrey A. Trogolo of Boston, Frank C. Rossitto of Danvers, Mass., and Edward K. Welch II of Ipswich, Mass., have developed an inorganic antimicrobial microcapsule.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention relates to a microcapsule comprising an inorganic antimicrobial agent coated with a hydrophilic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer is able to absorb sufficient water as to enable the action of the encapsulated antimicrobial agent. These microcapsules are useful to impart antimicrobial activity and can be used in polymer compositions, sprays and coatings."
