SOME CORAL REEFS MAY RECEIVE NATURAL SAFEGUARD

A new study suggests that a natural ocean mechanism helps to protect coral reefs in warm-ocean areas by moderating ocean temperatures. Published recently in Geophysical Research Letters, the research provides insight into the theory of a natural "thermostat" in the ocean that prevents sea surface temperatures from rising above 88°F.

An increase in water temperature is one of the main causes of coral bleaching, which causes corals to turn white and eventually collapse and die.
