In this article, based on his workshop at the GA Annual Conference in Derby in 2007, John Halocha brings together a variety of strategies for using photographs. He emphasises how the study of photographs can deepen understanding of places and environments at the same time as developing key skills.
Why use photographs?
* Photographs are commonplace so it is easy for students to take them for granted. They need to develop the skills that allow them to take a much more critical look at the images that bombard them in everyday life.
* Photographs are often seen out of context. Students should be aware that they only show a small and often highly selective view of the world.
