ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 24 -- Paul Lapstun, Simon Robert Walmsley and Kia Silverbrook, all from Balmain, Australia, have developed a printer.
According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A printer is provided for authenticating a replaceable ink cartridge. The printer includes a processor. The replaceable ink cartridge can be releasably coupled to the processor and includes a first integrated circuit (IC). A printhead is interfaced to the processor and is configured to print ink supplied from the ink cartridge. A second IC is interfaced to the processor and, together with the processor, can be used to authenticate the first IC and therefore the ink cartridge."
