Conductors who also appear publicly as pianists aren't exactly a rarity. George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, and more recently, James Levine have all been active as pianists, either as concerto soloists, chamber musicians, or accompanists. To find a career analogous to that of the indefatigable Daniel Barenboim, however, one must go all the way back to Hans von Bülow, who was perhaps the last musician to stride with such confidence between the keyboard and the conductor's podium.
