When the Soviet Union launched the first successful manned space flight in 1957, Americans were shocked! The response was immediate and intense. NASA scientists sent a number of satellites into orbit; the Defense Department created the Advanced Research Projects Agency, and government officials significantly increased spending on scientific research and education.
The Space Age brought new developments to almost every aspect of American life: nylon to Kevlar®; frozen orange juice to Tang®; vacuum tubes to microchips.
