Woman to be sentenced as adult in slaying of teenager

Peacha Atkinson, mother of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte who was brutally killed three years ago on a golf course outside Edmonton, hopes a maximum life sentence will be given to a woman who played a crucial role in her daughter's murder.

Her wish came a step closer when she learned at a May 1 hearing that the woman, who cannot be named because she was 17 at the time of the slaying, will be sentenced for manslaughter as an adult.

The woman has been in jail for three years since the crime and would likely be looking at imminent release if she were tried under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which states young offenders can only be held for that length of time as a maximum sentence.
