Major markets endured another month of punishment as the U.S. economy tried to keep itself out of recession. Inflationary pressures driven by record oil prices collided with an economic slowdown, further fueled by the housing slump and credit crisis. As our session ended February 29, 2008, consumer spending was reported flat in lanuary, and consumer sentiment in February was down substantially from its previous reading. A survey of manufacturing in the Chicago area, with a reading of 44.5, shows the economy contracting in the Midwest.
