Merger activity in the Midwest and nationally has slowed in recent months, with prices on a slight downward trend as well. Nevertheless, some significant transactions in the BankNews area in recent months have commanded multiples in excess of 3× equity.

BKD Corporate Finance reported in the Springfield, Mo.-based firm's November 2007 Financial Alert that nationally sales decreased to 75 in the third quarter compared with 78 in the same quarter of 2006. In BKD's 11-state Midwestern service area, the median price-to-equity multiple declined to 2.81 × from 2.98× in the second quarter and 3.21 in the first quarter.
