In the 1980s and early 1990s, an estimated 70,000 Peruvians died in the violent conflict between the state and the Maoist insurgency known as Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). In similar periods of civil war in Guatemala, El Salvador, and elsewhere in Latin America, state military and paramilitary forces committed the overwhelming majority of such killings.
