Practitioners commonly evaluate dogs and cats with signs of nasal disease, such as nasal discharge, sneezing, and stertorous respiration. In some cases, it is appropriate to recommend nonspecific, supportive treatment (eg. in cats with recurrent upper respiratory viral infections). But in many situations, a diagnostic evaluation is necessary, especially if there are signs of intranasal disease (e.g. unilateral nasal discharge). This evaluation allows for earlier diagnosis and treatment, which may improve the prognosis. Many cases can be evaluated in the routine practice setting, whereas others may require referral for procedures such as computed tomography and rhinoscopy.
