Two hundred years ago, the United States and Great Britain outlawed the transatlantic slave trade that had been active for nearly three centuries. Now, data from about 35,000 voyages of slave ships have revised the estimates of how many Africans were transported to the New World. Instead of the standard answer of fifteen million-a fictitious number originating with the abolition movement- information gleaned from ship records, contracts, journals, and other sources suggest that the number of people taken from Africa was around 12,500,000. Of that number, approximately 1,800,000 died during the perilous trip, known as the Middle Passage.
