SMSC Native American Preference Policy Working to Build Native American Workforce

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux (Dakota) Community, a federally-recognized Native American tribe, issued the following news release:

Unemployment is high in Indian Country, an average of 43% according to the United States Census, versus the national average of 6% and the Minnesota average of 4%. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has a Native American preference program which has been successful in helping build an Indian workforce. All construction contractors selected by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community agree to hire a certain percentage of Native American employees.
