The Consequences of the Diabetes Epidemic in Hispanic and Latino Communities

Diabetes mellitus is defined as a group of medical conditions marked by higher than normal levels of blood glucose caused by the human body's inability to produce adequate amounts of insulin to keep glucose levels under control.

According to statistics from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the incidence and prevalence of all categories of the disease has reached epidemic proportions in the United States adult population, largely due to co-factors such as poor nutrition, obesity and lack of exercise brought on by the increasingly sedentary American lifestyle.
