The theme of the 2008 CLA annual conference focuses attention on the relationship between libraries and publishing. As librarians, we depend on a vibrant Canadian publishing industry to help us provide collections that reflect Canadian interests and that allow Canadian voices to be heard. A vibrant Canadian industry is not a given, however. Canada's relatively small and highly diverse population has access to the publishing output of many countries. The Canadian publishing industry competes for our attention with large publishing enterprises operating in the United Kingdom, the United States, France and elsewhere.
