User Comments and Reviews: Decline or Democratization of the Online Public Access Catalogue?

I was online recently trying to buy a winter hat. I hadn't found anything warm enough in my hometown stores, so I thought I'd check out the selection the world had to offer on the Internet. After I'd narrowed down the styles and types that I liked, I checked out the customer reviews. What convinced me to buy one particular hat was a comment posted by a customer who'd worn it while dogsledding in Greenland. It had, according to him, withstood the extreme conditions and kept him warm. I'm now waiting for the hat to come in the mail. It could be that the review was correct and I'll never be cold again.
