Assessing the work and success of a library's reference service is a topic of continuing interest. Eric Novotny has collected 12 articles on the subject and presents them under three main headings: library case studies and research results (five); standards and methods for evaluating virtual reference (five); and assessing library instruction in an online environment (two). The majority of the writers work in an academic environment, but public libraries are also represented.
