The Story of a Miraculous Wartime Resurrection

I've been reading The Day of Battle, the second of prizewinning journalist Rick Atkinson's widely praised histories of operations in World War II's European Theater. The Day of Battle describes Operations Husky and Avalanche against Sicily and Italy consecutively. Launched in 1943 at British insistence, nominally as a prelude to the Normandy invasion, they instead resulted in a costly battle of attrition that lasted until Germany itself finally surrendered in 1945.
