Spc. Monica Brown grew up in a small town in Texas and joined the Army at age 17, becoming a medic; at age 19 she made headlines as the first woman in Afghanistan-and only the second woman since World War II-to receive the Silver Star. Spc. Brown braved insurgent gunfire to save the lives of soldiers wounded when a roadside bomb struck their Humvee in April 2007. "I just did my job/' she says, "I didn't expect any recognition for it."
