We were returning from the day's outing, a familiarization patrol, designed for the platoon to get to know the area and locals, when the fast radio chatter started. There was a suspected Taliban road checkpoint-four men in a blue flatbed jingle truck, blocking the road and demanding money for passage. Rolling and armed, and just minutes from the reported location, we were the immediate responders, now racing for the site.
