Individuals at Risk: Defending human rights one person at a time

Police in Niger arrested newspaper editor Ibrahim Manzo Diallo in October 2007, accusing him of being a correspondent for a French broadcasting company banned by the government. Transferred to military custody, Diallo was held for three weeks before being charged with having links to rebel forces opposing the government.

Within hours of his arrest, Amnesty International's Urgent Action Network contacted thousands of activists worldwide who immediately inundated the Niger government with faxes, e-mails and letters demanding that Diallo's safety be guaranteed and that he be released. The campaign continued until his release in February 2008.
