Article: House Committee Approves Bill to Prevent Dust Explosions

COMBUSTIBLE DUST

On April 30, the U.S. House of Representatives passed-by a 247 to 165 vote-legislation that would force OSHAto issue a rule regulating combustible industrial dusts. The legislation is designed to help prevent combustible dust explosions such as the one at the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, GA, on Feb. 7 that killed 13 workers and injured more than 60 others.

The Combustible Dust Explosion and Fire Prevention Act (H.R. 5522), introduced by George Miller (D-CA) and John Barrow (D-GA), would require OSHA to issue rules regulating combustible industrial dusts that can build up to hazardous levels and explode.
