Derailed but Not Defeated

On the night before I began the first draft of this essay, I dreamed that I was cleaning out my first faculty office. It's significant, I think, that this dream occurred more than twenty years after I actually loaded my books and files into boxes and moved out of that "interdisciplinary studies" office at "Southwest U." My dream made me realize that I still needed to clear out some of the psychic stuff I'd left behind, and writing about my experience has helped my mind move on along with my career. After initially derailing, I got back on the tenure track (at a different university) and now hold a tenured position that I truly enjoy (at yet another university).
