Overlays, Matrices, and Boundaries: A "Mixed-Media" Approach in Pedagogy and Art

I teach a two-semester course in introductory drawing, along with art history and art appreciation, at Shenandoah University. Drawing is also the foundation of my art practice and my passion. This essay engages teaching and art-making as interleaved and intertwined practices. Beginning with concepts that guide my approaches in the classroom, I elaborate my thoughts on drawing. Next, I detail the subsets of these thoughts, the fields that my students explore: mixed media, reading and writing, collaborations, intersections, and overlays.
