WHEN IT COMES TO TREATING heart attacks, time is a crucial component. Each minute between the onset of a heart attack and proper treatment can mean the difference between life and death. Yet only a fraction of patients who arrive at the nation's emergency departments suffering from ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) receive what the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) consider quality care.
