Pro-Israel Groups Lead Local Opposition to Al Jazeera

The conflict that erupted over Burlington Telecom's decision to cease broadcasts of Al Jazeera English recalls a similar battle involving the network in Canada several years ago. In both cases, opposition to Al Jazeera was driven by Jewish and pro-Israel groups.

In 2004, a petition by the Québec cable company Vidéotron Itée to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for permission to broadcast Al Jazeera's Arabic content was opposed by B'nai Brith Canada, the Canadian Jewish Congress and other supporters of Israel.
